Year of Mercy: The Corporal & Spiritual Works of Mercy

07 Dec

“I have decided to announce an Extraordinary Jubilee which has at its centre the mercy of God. It will be a Holy Year of Mercy. We want to live in the light of the word of the Lord: “Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful” (cf. Lk 6:36). And this especially applies to confessors! So much mercy!” – Pope Francis

Welcome to the Year of Mercy! From 8 December 2015 until 20 November 2016, the world is invited to take part in an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, during which we are invited to return to the Sacraments – in particular the Sacrament of Confession. We are also invited to live out the Year of Mercy in a special way through the seven corporal and seven spiritual works of mercy, which are:

Corporal Works of Mercy

  • feed the hungry
  • give drink to the thirsty
  • clothe the naked
  • shelter the homeless
  • visit the sick
  • visit the imprisoned
  • bury the dead

Spiritual Works of Mercy

  • counsel the doubtful
  • instruct the ignorant
  • admonish sinners
  • comfort the afflicted
  • forgive offenses
  • bear wrongs patiently
  • pray for the living and the dead
